Handbook of Technical Textiles

While various books address the technical textile industry, most are vague or narrow in scope, addressing only a specific process, fabric structure, or area of application. Although the development of technical and industrial applications for textiles goes back many years, more recent milestones have marked the emergence of technical textiles, as we know them today. Very largely, these have centered upon new materials, processes, and applications.

A comprehensive book, HANDBOOK OF TECHNICAL TEXTILES provides in-depth coverage of all the principal aspects of manufacturing processes and fabric structures, plus in-depth reporting on all major applications of high-tech textiles.

This publication examines textiles for a wide range of industrial uses, including heat and flame protection applications, waterproof and breathable fabrics, geotextiles and natural fibre geotextiles; as well as the use of textiles in medicine, defence, transport and filtration; textiles for survival, and textiles and the environment.

HANDBOOK OF TECHNICAL TEXTILES is ideal for textile yarn and fibre manufacturers, producers of woven, knitted, and non-woven fabrics, textile finishers, and companies producing new textile coatings and colorants. If you work with textiles in any capacity, this will prove itself an indispensable guide and an up-to-date reference book.

Design and Manufacture of Textile Composites

Textile composites encompass a rather narrow range of materials, based on three-dimensional reinforcements produced using specialist equipment. This book describes the design, manufacture and applications of textile composites. The intention is to describe the broad range of polymer composite materials with textile reinforcements, from woven and non-crimp commodity fabrics to 3-D textiles and their applications. The book gives particular attention to the modelling of textile structures, composites manufacturing methods, and subsequent component performance. This practical book is an invaluable guide for manufacturers of polymer composite components, end-users and designers, structural materials researchers, and textile manufacturers involved in the development of new products with textile composites.

Composite Materials: Engineering and Science

As composite materials gain increasing prominence in engineering applications, it becomes essential for designers and engineers to have a thorough grounding in the various material forms, their production, their benefits, and their limitations.

Composite Materials: Engineering and Science helps build the groundwork needed to begin incorporating these remarkable materials -- with high strength and stiffness yet low weight -- into projects, and effectively exploit their advantages.

The text discusses the different forms of reinforcement and matrix and their interaction. Although it focuses on the most widely used composites -- polymer matrices and fibrous reinforcement -- it also addresses metal and ceramic matrix systems.

A substantial portion of the text deals with methods for calculating stiffness and strength, and the authors provide worked examples and representative data. The final chapters address the various aspects of mechanical behavior, including toughness, fatigue, impact resistance, and the properties of joints -- including toughening mechanisms and repair. The book concludes with a presentation of non-destructive testing methods.

With its numerous examples and self-assessment questions, Composite Materials: Engineering and Science makes the ideal text for designers and engineers new to the world of composites.

3-D Textile Reinforcements In Composite Materials

Laminated composite materials have been used in structural applications since the 1960s. However, their high cost and inability to accommodate fibers in the laminate's thickness direction greatly reduce their damage tolerance and impact resistance.

The second generation of materials-3-D textile reinforced composites-offers significant cost reduction, and by incorporating reinforcement in the thickness direction, dramatically increases damage tolerance and impact resistance. However, methods for predicting mechanical properties of 3-D textile reinforced composite materials tend to be more complex.

These materials also have disadvantages-particularly in regard to crimps in the yarns-that require more research. Textile preforms, micro- and macromechanical modeling, manufacturing processes, and characterization all need further development. As researchers overcome these problems, this new generation of composites will emerge as a highly competitive family of materials.

3-D Textile Reinforcements in Composite Materials provides a state-of-the-art account of this promising technology. In it, top experts describe the manufacturing processes, highlight the advantages, identify the main applications, analyze methods for predicting mechanical properties, and detail various reinforcement strategies, including grid structure, knitted fabric composites, and the braiding technique.

Armed with the information in this book, readers will be prepared to better exploit the advantages of 3-D textile reinforced composites, overcome its disadvantages, and contribute to the further development of the technology.
