Crailar Set To Start Up Pamplico Processing Facility
Vancouver, Canada-based Crailar Techologies Inc. has begun processing CRAiLAR® Flax Fiber at its
143,500-square-foot fiber-processing facility in Pamplico, S.C. The flax processed at the plant is
grown as a winter crop in the surrounding area. The company invested $8 million to open the facility
— formerly the Delta Mills Cypress plant — and to create 25 jobs. It also received incentives
totaling $263,500, approved by the South Carolina Coordinating Council for Economic Development,
for building upfits and job development credits.
According to Ken Barker, CEO, Crailar Technologies, the plant's startup "will put us on course for significant developments for CRAiLAR Flax Fiber and its global brand partners in 2013."
Crailar has moved all operations formerly conducted at its Kingstree, S.C., pilot plant to the Pamplico site. Once production is up and running at Pamplico, the company will begin processing 150,000 pounds of Crailar Flax Fiber per week in the first month of operation, increasing to 300,000 pounds per week the following month, and then 450,000 pounds per week. By the end of 2013, Crailar anticipates it will have a total production capacity of more than one million pounds of Crailar Flax per week.
