Alexium To Build Facility In Greer, SC, Add 200 Jobs

Alexium Inc., a subsidiary of Australia-based Alexium International Group Ltd., has invested $8 million to establish a technical fabric manufacturing and research and development facility in Greer, S.C., and expects to hire 200 employees during the next five years.

Alexium International holds an exclusive license to use Reactive Surface Treatment (RST) technology, a process developed at the U.S. Air Force Research Labs, Materials and Manufacturing Directorate (AFRL) and Air Base Science Division. The original research was funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, Joint Science & Technology Office and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency; and the U.S. Air Force holds the original U.S. patent. The technology enables surface modification and attachment of nanoparticles or multiple chemical functional groups onto a variety of surfaces or substrates to provide water- and oil-proofing, antimicrobial, nonstick and ultraviolet protection, and other functions. Alexium will produce technical fabric products for the U.S. military and will collaborate with AFRL to develop new textiles and other advanced materials for commercial applications such as building materials, glass, packaging, paints and other applications.
