STA Winter Seminar

Southern Textile Association Winter Technical Seminar topics ranged from accepting change to problem solving.

T he Textile Technology Center, located at Gaston College East Campus, Belmont, N.C., was the site recently of the annual Southern Textile Association (STA) Winter Technical Seminar. After introductions from STA President George Abbot of Inman Mills and STA First Vice President Lisa Siggins of Glen Raven Inc., Glen Raven President Allen Gant, Jr. kicked off the event with a motivational speech focused on the influence of personal freedom and the individuals ability to change.

Gant On Innovation
Gant provided insight into the advance of freedom around the world, predominantly after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. He then linked the idea of innovation to personal freedom. As global competition is heightened by hard-working, smart and now "freer" workforces around the world, Americans need to recognize the competitive advantage freedom presents, he said.

Gant spoke of the ability of the free individual to make choices and to accept and promote change all important to the individual creating innovation. "You are the only one who has the ability to change the channel," he said. "You are the one that chooses. Anything can be done there are no limits only you set those limits. Can you step up and take advantage of the freedom change the channel he continued. Innovate, innovate, innovate. If you don't innovate, you don't win."

Gant concluded his remarks with a roundup of outstanding issues being pursued by the Washington-based National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO), and answering questions about subjects ranging from Glen Raven's recent announcement of the New Frontiers division focused on innovation and headed by Philippe Petot to concerns about Vietnam and the World Trade Organization.

Seminar Presentations
Richard Shainin, executive vice president of Livonia, Mich.-based Shainin LLC, presented his firm’s problem-solving methodology, RedX® Problem Solving, which features a FACTUAL™ approach. FACTUAL is an acronym for “Focus, Approach, Converge, Test, Understand, Apply and Leverage.”

Taylor Training And Consulting
Marilyn Taylor, president of Lexington, N.C.-based Taylor Training and Consulting presented solutions for making meetings more effective. Taylor explained that 11 million meetings occur in the United States every day. Most professionals attend a total of 61.8 meetings per month, and research indicates that 50 percent is wasted time. Taylor went on to say that through setting proper meeting objectives and realistic planning, meetings can take less time and be more satisfying to all involved. She explained the M.O.R.E. method, which stands for “Manage the process, Organize the content, Reinforce desired behaviors, and Evaluate and improve.”

Verizon Data Solutions Manager Mark Boggs spent time answering questions from the audience in his session titled, “What You Wanted to Know about Your Blackberry but Were Afraid to Ask.” Boggs has a broad knowledge of the subject of hand-held devices and offered solutions, tips and tricks to maximize these technologies.

TekniQuest Systems
Anthony Demers, president of Barrington, R.I.-based TekniQuest Systems Inc., presented his company’s solution for lowering training costs in the textile industry through computer-based training (CBT). Demers reviewed how training is a cost whether a company pursues a formal program or utilizes on-the-job training. “It will cost between $20,000 and $30,000 to train an employee no matter what your program,” he said. He went on to explain that through the use of CBT, dramatic reductions — ranging from 25 to 60 percent — could be achieved in training cycles and costs, employee turnover, and ultimately in product returns. Demers’ company analyzes the job that is to be the subject of the training program and produces CBT programs for a standardized training method.

Institute Of Technology
The seminar closed with an overview from Gilbert O’Neal, president of Raleigh, N.C.-based Institute of Textile Technology (ITT), regarding the latest areas of research addressed by ITT programs. Whether it be ionic liquids — the basis of “green” recyclable solvents — or eco-friendly flame retardants or melt-spun acrylic fiber research, ITT continues to focus on applied research for the textile industry. Additionally, the institute is working to develop new business models that serve an integrated supply chain, as well as customer care programs that leverage information technology.
