DSM Dyneema Opens New Production Line

DSM Dyneema LLC, Stanley, N.C., recently established its first Dyneema® fiber production line in the United States. The line, housed in the company's Greenville, N.C., plant, has an annual capacity of 600 to 750 tons, and will supply the two unidirectional bullet-resistant material production lines that are at the same Greenville location.

Dyneema, a polyethylene fiber, is 15 times stronger than steel and 40 percent stronger than competing aramid fibers in weight-for-weight comparisons, according to the company. The fiber can be used in materials for bullet-resistant airplane cockpit doors, bullet-proof armor, and protective clothing for law-enforcement and military use, among other end-uses.
