Textiles Gain Clout In House Of Representatives

Rep. .Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the newly elected House minority leader, has named Rep. John Spratt (D-S.C.) Assistant Leader and her designee to the Budget Committee. While the naming of Spratt was generally recognized as a move to place a moderate in a key post to help offset Pelosis strong liberal record, the move should help strengthen the textile industrys position in Congress, as Spratt is the leading Democrat in the Congressional Textile Caucus. Another strong textile industry supporter, Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.), is in line to become vice-chairman of the Democratic caucus. November 2002
