Small Businesses Receive Military Beret Contracts

Small Businesses ReceiveMilitary Beret ContractsThe Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), Fort Belvoir, Va., has awarded contracts to two small businesses for the production of military berets. Dorothea Knitting Mills U.S. Ltd., New York City, and Cabot, Ark.-based Bancroft Cap Co. each will manufacture 1.98 million berets, which will be used primarily by the U.S. Army.DLA solicited bids from more than 150 firms as part of an effort to support U.S. small businesses and generate jobs in the textile and apparel industries. Thirteen companies submitted proposals. The way this contract was written is an example of [DLAs] efforts to encourage small businesses that, in the past, would never have considered submitting proposals to manufacture them, said Col. Tom Ashman, USAF, deputy executive director for DLAs Acquisition, Technical, and Supply Directorate. The fact that we received 13 proposals is very encouraging, he added. A year ago, we knew of only one American small business that would meet the requirements for producing this item. November 2002
