Zimmer To Build Plant For PTT Poly Canada

Zimmer AG, a Frankfurt-based subsidiary of mg technologies ag, has received a contract to build a plant for the production of polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT) for PTT Poly Canada. The plant, to be located in Montreal, will be the largest industrial-scale PTT production facility in the world, according to Zimmer. Using a process developed jointly by Zimmer and Shell Chemicals, the plant will produce 95,000 tons of PTT per year from 1,3 propanediol (PDO) and terephthalic acid (PTA). PTT is used in various textile and carpet applications.Shell will supply the PDO raw material from its Geismer, La.-based chemical operation. Zimmer will provide the technology and engineering for the plant, as well as supply the equipment. The project, valued at 40 million euros, is scheduled for completion in late 2003.
