Friction Free Technologies Inc., New York City, has named Mary-Ellen Smith president. Smith will direct research and development of new materials and applications for the company’s Friction Free® technology. She replaces the company’s COO, Chuck Smith .

Herrmann Ultrasonics Inc., Schaumburg, Ill., has added Richard Slaten to its team of sales engineers. Slaten will be responsible for territories in the Southeast.

Stephanie M. Shern has joined Kurt Salmon Associates (KSA) as senior vice president and global marketing director for retail and consumer products. Shern will assist clients in developing solutions to business challenges, lead new client initiatives and coordinate services across KSA’s regions.



Mickey D. Lankford , Avondale Mills, Monroe, Ga., was elected chairman of the Association of Georgia’s Textile, Carpet and Consumer Products Manufacturers (GTMA). Thomas B. Gardner , senior vice president, bath manufacturing, Springs Industries Inc., Griffin, Ga., was elected vice chairman; and William A. Barron Jr. , vice president, manufacturing, Shaw Industries, Dalton, Ga., was elected treasurer. Elected to serve three-year terms on the Board of Directors were: André Thibault , COO Victor Forstmann Inc., Dublin, Ga.; Timothy J. Driver , senior vice president, manufacturing, Swift Denim, Atlanta; Richard P. Strawthorn , director, risk management, Mohawk Industries, Calhoun, Ga.; Doug Hettinger , plant manager, Ethicon, Cornelia, Ga.; Larry Keown , vice president, manufacturing, Mannington Carpets Inc., Calhoun; and Joe Glovier , vice president, operations, Wellington Leisure Products, Madison, Ga. The association re-elected Roy Bowen as president and Suzanne Wilkes as secretary. Mac McGowan , vice president, manufacturing, Interface Americas, LaGrange, Ga., was elected to fill an unexpired term on the Board.

The Board of Directors of Switzerland-based Rieter Holding Ltd. elected Dieter Spälti to a three-year-term of office. In addition, Dr. Peter Grädel is the new head of corporate communications. Grädel replaces Dr. Barbara Meili , who is leaving the company.

Omnova Solutions, Fairlawn, Ohio, has promoted Larry Dray to vice president, strategic sourcing. Dray will be responsible for all raw material purchasing for the company, as well as supply and service contracts.

Bayer Corp., Pittsburgh, has named Roger N. Smith vice president of the Textile Chemicals business unit in the United States and also regional manager for Textile Chemicals in the NAFTA region. Smith is responsible for Textile Chemicals’ sales, marketing, manufacturing and product development.

Zellweger Uster Inc., Knoxville, Tenn., has appointed Peter Jones vice president of sales and service for the Americas. Jones is responsible for sales and after-sales service for all Uster products, namely laboratory equipment for fiber and yarn testing, Quantum clearers, Fabriscan and IntelliGin.



Joseph R. Gladden Jr. and J. Hicks Lanier have been elected to the Board of Directors of WestPoint Stevens, West Point, Ga. Their election brings total Board membership to nine.

The Board of Directors of Cone Mills Corp., Greensboro, N.C., has elected Tom McKenna and Mike Whisenant executive vice presidents of the corporation. In addition, Samir M. Gabriel was elected controller, responsible for accounting, financial systems, inventory control and business planning.

Edward Hollier has joined Stoddard International USA (BMK Stoddard) as national sales manager. Hollier will be responsible for residential carpet sales throughout North America and will manage Stoddard’s team of independent sale agents. He replaces Lee Wyndham , who stepped down due to ill health.

Eastern Color & Chemical Co., Providence, R.I., has added Kenneth Carrick to its Southern sales force. Carrick brings 28 years of textile experience to his new position as technical sales representative.

KoSa, Charlotte, N.C., named Troy Stanley director, Textile Strategy. In his new position, Stanley will develop the global textile strategy with respect to the efficient utilization of plant resources, management of capital investments and determination of product viability. Achim Heyer will succeed Stanley as business director, Textile Staple.
