Unifi Celebrates 40 Years, Dedicates Facility To Founder Allen Mebane
Greensboro, N.C.-based Unifi Inc. — a producer and processor of multifilament polyester and nylon
textured yarns and related raw materials — is celebrating its 40th year in business. Since its
founding in 1971 by G. Allen Mebane IV, the company has become one of the world's largest textured
yarn makers with subsidiaries abroad and a portfolio of branded, premium value-added products
(See "
Unifi
Returns To Profitability," November/December 2010, www.
TextileWorld.com).
The company recently held a ceremony to dedicate its Yadkinville, N.C., facility to the late founder and recognize his influence on Unifi, the textile industry and the community. Mebane served on several textile industry boards throughout his tenure including the American Textile Manufacturers Institute, North Carolina Textile Association and the American Synthetic Yarn Association; and was a board of trustee member and major donor to Philadelphia University, formerly Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science. He believed that children are the future, and in 1992 he founded the Mebane Charitable Foundation to improve public education in North Carolina. Mebane served as Unifi's chairman for nearly 30 years until his retirement in 2000.
Speakers at the dedication ceremony included Unifi Chairman and CEO William L. Jasper; Unifi President and COO Roger Berrier; and Ken Langone, a Unifi member of the Board, former director of the New York Stock Exchange and cofounder of Home Depot. Guided tours of the G. Allen Mebane Industrial Complex were offered following the ceremony.
"Forty years ago, Allen Mebane envisioned a textile company that would operate under the motto 'Quality Through Pride' — a company that would lead by example," Jasper said. "Today, Unifi continues to be a world-class textile company known for quality, service and innovation — all corporate priorities established by our founder. In celebration of Unifi's 40th anniversary, the Company is proud to dedicate the Yadkinville facility in Mr. Mebane's honor."
