Alexium, ITG Sign MoU
Greer, S.C.-based Alexium Inc. — a wholly owned subsidiary of Australia-based Alexium International
Group Ltd., a holder of proprietary patent applications for Reactive Surface Treatment (RST)
technology — and Greensboro, N.C.-based fabric manufacturer and finisher International Textile
Group Inc. (ITG) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under which the companies will
collaborate on several product development initiatives, with ITG serving as Alexium's preferred
fabric supplier for commercial and defense bids. The MoU will leverage capability and resources
while speeding up the textile market's adoption of RST technology — a protective treatment that can
be applied to apparel and other textiles to provide waterproofing, oil repellency, flame
retardation (FR), chemical and biological protection and other functions.
Alexium currently is working with ITG's Safety Components, Carlisle Finishing and Burlington Worldwide business units on existing projects — mainly treating military combat uniforms and battle dress uniforms with a breathable, repellent finish — and reports it will be expanding the applications on a select number of product lines across several ITG divisions. The companies also recently partnered to supply outer-shell fabrics for the U.S. Department of Defense's Uniform Integrated Protection Ensemble comprising a lightweight chemical/biological protection suit.
"In addition to being a well-established worldwide supplier of quality fabrics, we view ITG as a strategic partner for developing new product lines that incorporate RST (Reactive Surface Treatment) technology, ultimately leading to a licensing deal," said Stefan Susta, executive director and COO, Alexium International. "We see a lot of synergy between the two companies moving forward, and appreciate their interest to develop innovative products with our process."
Alexium currently is involved in several ongoing demonstration projects for commercial and defense customers, including a MoU with Australia-based Bruck Textiles Pty Ltd.; a commercial license option and facilities access agreement with Spring City, Tenn.-based FR apparel supplier SSM Industries Inc.; and tenders with the U.S. Department of Defense to treat specialty protective apparel.
