The Rupp Report: It’s Time For Business -- It’s Time For Home Textiles

Jürg Rupp, Executive Editor

As they do every year, the global home and contract textiles industries are now gathering in Frankfurt: Heimtextil 2010 will take place January 13 to 16 under the slogan "Take a Walk on the Style Side." The world's biggest trade fair for home and contract textiles will present the latest trends and products from the world of home, household and contract textiles, presenting a unique range of products and services. In addition, a comprehensive complementary program will feature showcases, lecture forums, panel discussions and a variety of workshops.

Contract Business
A special show area in Hall 3.1 will spotlight the rapidly expanding contract business and be the central meeting place for hotel and restaurant, office, congress and conference center, clinic, care and rehabilitation sector representatives -- including planners, hotel operators, interior designers, architects and other related professions looking for suppliers in the contract-furnishing field. In Hall 8.0, where mattresses, bedding and design are the focus, there will be a lecture forum and the Contract Competence Center.

For the first time, Heimtextil will spotlight the contract business especially for the household-textiles segment. On Friday, January 15, Contract Day will be an event intended primarily for contract business decision-makers -- for example, hotel operators, purchasing managers and housekeepers. One of the main subjects is costs, including flat linen purchasing versus leasing. Other topics include patient and care hotels, flat laundry hygiene standards in the hotel sector, health and care, and the results of the new FutureHotel study by the Fraunhofer Institute. Additionally, special tours, lectures and other activities will be offered for housekeepers in particular.

Manifold Program
At this year's Heimtextil, the traditional award procedure for the first time will be supplemented with innovative trend scouting. On the first day of the fair, around 25 architects will visit all relevant exhibition halls and search for new generations of innovative products from the contract-textiles, textile room-divider/sun-protection systems, wall covering, wallpaper and furniture product groups, all of which are of particular interest to architects and interior architects. The 15 most-mentioned products will go forward into a second evaluation round, and on Thursday, a second jury will decide on the winners of the trend scouting.

On Wednesday and Friday, Material ConneXion Cologne, a leading international scout for innovative materials and technologies, will hold material workshops on "Organic Innovations" and "Smart Textiles." These workshops are aimed primarily at product developers, designers and marketing experts who want to develop new concepts for their own products in cooperation with materials experts.

Lecture Forum
"Every year, we prepare a multifarious programme that offers both exhibitors and visitors insights into the latest trends in the sector. With the 'Let's talk about it!' lecture forum in particular, we tackle subjects such as entering new markets, export strategies and brand and license management, which are of great importance to the sector in times of economic difficulty," said Olaf Schmidt, vice president, Textile Fairs, of Heimtextil organizer Messe Frankfurt GmbH.

Promoting Young Talent

Heimtextil gives young designers a platform by presenting awards including the Young Contract Creations Award, and the Upholstery and Wall Awards. The organizers have received more than 70 entries from all over Europe for the Wall promotional award and more than 70 for the Upholstery award.A special feature of this competition is the interaction between design and handicrafts. The designs submitted will be put into practice at a special live show in Hall 5.0. Under the slogan "Sit and Wait," the focus of the Upholstery promotional award-- which in 2010 will be given for the third time-- is on textile seating furniture, such as design ideas for surgery center, clinic and public authority waiting rooms; and charter passenger or frequent flyer lounges. Additionally, young people will have the chance to exchange ideas with trade visitors in Hall 1.1.
