Agion Launches Agion® Active™ Dual-Action Anti-Odor Technology
Agion Technologies Inc., Wakefield, Mass., has launched a new textile treatment that combines its
well-established Agion® silver-based antimicrobial technology with a new mineral-based technology
to pull in and eliminate ambient or absorbed odors that are not caused by bacteria. Agion Active™
dual-action technology has applications in apparel such as sportswear, uniforms and casual wear;
camping gear such as tents and sleeping bags; and a range of other textile applications including
carpets and pet beds.
According to Paul Ford, Agion's CEO, the mineral-based technology involves the use of silicate, a crystalline substance that has a high surface area and is able to pull in ambient odors including larger molecules that might block the pores in activated charcoal.
Agion Active™ also enables treatment of white materials without causing discoloration, a common problem with other silver-based textile treatments, according to the company. Ford said this advantage comes from the addition of copper in the antimicrobial technology.
"Copper actually is a sacrificial ion in this application and blocks the formation of color," he explained. "That's why we're able to do white."
The company also notes that Agion Active is incorporated during the textile finishing process, which it reports is a cost-effective and flexible solution for manufacturers that want to provide variety without maintaining large inventories of each color and/or style offered.
Agion Active has been certified according to the Cradle to CradleSM Gold Level standard for environmental, health and safety, and social responsibility; and is the first and only antimicrobial to date to achieve that level of certification.
