Beaulieu Commercial’s Nexterra® Receives Sustainability Certification

Adairsville, Ga.-based carpet manufacturer Beaulieu Commercial’s Nexterra® eco-friendly carpet tile backing has received top-level platinum certification for compliance with the NSF/ANSI 140-2007 sustainability standard from Ann Arbor, Mich.-based third-party certification organization NSF International.

NSF/ANSI 140-2007 is a new sustainable carpet assessment standard based on public health and environmental performance criteria including economic, environmental and social aspects related to the products. Beaulieu Commercial’s Nexterra products manufactured at its Adairsville and Chatsworth, Ga., facilities are the first products certified under the new standard, and include 20 products in the company’s BOLYU Contract and Cambridge Commercial lines.

The standard establishes criteria related to sustainable manufacturing processes; reclamation and end-of-life management; energy usage and efficiency; use of bio-based, recycled or environmentally preferable materials; and efforts to minimize adverse impacts on public health, the environment and the community.

Nexterra contains 85-percent post-consumer recycled material and is manufactured in a process that uses no water and uses 100-percent renewable energy. As one of the leading purchasers of renewable energy in the United States, Beaulieu Commercial has been named to the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership.

“From a sustainability standpoint, NSF 140-2007 is one of the more important initiatives for the floor covering industry,” said James Lesslie, president, Beaulieu Commercial. “The NSF140 Standard is what our customers have requested for years: one standard that can be used to compare products.”
