ATC Undertakes Greener Initiatives
Pittsburgh-based American Textile Co. (ATC) - a manufacturer of mattress and pillow protectors, bed
pillows and mattress pads - has launched two sustainability initiatives to reduce waste and
landfill use, and has created a new executive position to oversee these and other environmental
initiatives.
ATC appointed John Angelini its first-ever vice president of compliance and sustainability.
Angelini recently contracted with Pittsburgh Recycling Services to recycle cardboard, office paper
and shrink-wrap used at ATC's Duquesne, Pa., production facility. "This is just one of several
steps we are taking as a company to be more environmentally conscious and to help preserve the
planet for future generations," he said. Each week, the company will recycle approximately 2.5 tons
of waste instead of sending it to a landfill, resulting in an estimated total of more than 130 tons
recycled annually.
ATC also is introducing eco-friendly packaging on several of its products, including its
flagship Aller-Ease line, designed for allergy and asthma sufferers. The new packaging - made from
recyclable cardboard material instead of plastic, as was used previously -will decrease the
company's plastic landfill waste by an estimated 300,000 pounds annually. ATC plans to implement
the new packaging on its retail products by the end of 2008.
