Wichita, Kan.-based Invista — a global integrated fibers and polymers manufacturer — has announced that beginning this week, it will temporarily cease nylon operations at its Waynesboro, Va., facility, putting approximately 210 employees and an undetermined number of contractors out of work. The company cited declining carpet demand in deciding to halt nylon production.

“In light of the current economic challenges, we must respond quickly to improve the long-term viability of the Waynesboro site and increase our chances for success in the global marketplace,” said Mike Laczynski, site manager. “We intend to restart the idled operations in the future. We don’t know how long this period of idling might last as start-up and timing will be determined by market conditions.” 

Invista’s Waynesboro site produces nylon fiber for Stainmaster® carpet and Lycra® fiber for hosiery, socks and sports apparel, among other end-uses. The facility also houses a spandex research and development (R&D) center. Lycra production and R&D activities are not affected by the stoppage.
