AF&Y, Plastex Commence Recycling Program
Chapel Hill, N.C.-based American
Fibers & Yarns Co. (AF&Y) and Houston-based recycling company Plastex Inc. have begun a
program to recycle AF&Y yarns and fabrics made with AF&Y yarns collected from apparel,
upholstery and industrial customers and their consumers. AF&Y will collect the materials at its
Bainbridge, Ga., technology center, and then will send them to Plastex for conversion into plastic
resin pellets, offsetting the need for virgin pellets originating directly from oil production.
The recycled resin will be used in such applications as water filters and filtration fabrics; truck trunk liners and wastewater liners; automotive under-the-hood black parts; automotive interior parts; and flower pots, man-made pine straw and weed-block fabrics.
“With environmental stewardship becoming increasingly important, we feel compelled to do our part to reduce the impact our yarns have on the environment,” said Michael Apperson, president and CEO, AF&Y. “While our overall yarn manufacturing process is already earth-friendly, our partnership with Plastex further validates our commitment to implementing green practices across the board.”
