Vietnam Seeks Admission To The World Trade Organization

Washinigton Outlook

James A. Morrissey, Washington Correspondent

European Union and Vietnamese trade officials have concluded talks that could pave the way for Vietnam to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2005. While the action could start the ball rolling, Vietnam, which has become a major player in textile trade, would have to gain the support of countries, including the United States, who have an interest in Vietnamese trade. Cass Johnson, president of the National Council of Textile Organizations, says that while he believes Vietnams eventual admission to the 147-member organization is inevitable, the United States should insist that the accession agreement include safeguard provisions similar to the Chinese accession agreement.
